Plain Indian costume was made of the most common skin Wapiti deer, living in North America. Daily outfits were not decorated. Clothing decorative expected to ceremonies and dances. Patterns and colors had symbolic significance, most of the design was geometric. Used natural dyes. Decorating costumes were done by women, using a soft, flexible tendons as thread and dyed with natural pigments North American porcupine spines (igłozwierza) and purchased from white traders of different colored beads. Execution of decorative costume was extremely laborious.
Male costume consisted of legginów, which leggings, loincloth and long-sleeved shirts or vests.
Women wore long dresses, leather and calf assumed women legginy, resembling today’s socks.
Everyone wore leather shoes – loafers. For the winter sewed special high moccasins with buffalo leather with the hair inside.
Decorating costumes performed include fringed leather or fur ermine. Embroidery both clothes and moccasins. The most important person in the tribe had ornaments made of human hair. Winter coats were made from buffalo skins, later also with blankets.
Indians are very fond of jewelry. Decorations were suspended on the neck, the hair, ears and hands. Necklaces were made in different forms: armor by, tied close to the neck; Long breastplates; and necklaces called loop – made up of several strings of different lengths. A popular adornment for both women and men, were earrings.
The Indians wore different hairstyles, what’s interesting – were not always this long hair. Some tribes long hair entwined in braids, they wove in no additional straps. Other shaved almost the entire head, leaving only the single strands. Pawnee people wore distinctive curls scalping. Characteristic was changing hairstyles because of a particular event (eg. Dissolving the hair, or cutting off the tail). A similar diversity found in the area of –headgear: headband, plumes, caps.
